Hey team,
Recently we unlisted the best performing videos on YouTube for our new client, which may seem like backwards advice…
Why would you remove the best performers which are still bringing in consistent views if we’re trying to grow a channel?
It all comes down to trying to align our content to the target audience, and giving the algorithm time to understand that
This client was an AI engineer, and a lot of his earlier content was very technical, and was only understood buy other AI engineers or at the very least AI enthusiasts
But to the average business owner (his target customer) his titles looked like a foreign language
So whilst his videos were doing well, reaching thousands of views, the issue was these viewers are all existing AI engineers and his target market is business owners who’re wanting to become more efficient with AI
And even when we pivoted the content to be more targeted towards business owners, the algorithm kept pushing his content to AI engineers because those older videos were constantly pulling in that audience
Once we decided to unlist every video that isn’t targeted at the new audience, views plummeted but it essentially reset us within the algorithm
The first couple videos did okay, but then the third video hit 500 views in a week
More importantly, this video hit the right audience
He generated 9 new leads due to the trust built thanks to the YouTube video
This videos gone on to get 2,500 views and the following two videos both cracked 1,000 views too
Pretty strong for a channel with 400 subscribers at the time
The overall message of this, is no amount of views is worth it if your video is aimed at the wrong audience
It’ll mess up how the algorithm views your channel and prevent you from reaching the right people who do want to buy from you
And if you are in the process of pivoting your channel, then unlisting videos that are still getting views but aren’t aligned to your niche is a good start. In some cases it may even be better to start a new channel aimed at the new audience.
