Hey team,

There’s one strategy Ive consistently used to grow my own social media channels, along with my clients, for close to 10 years now

Its always worked extremely well and been some of the best performing content for us

Not only that, but unlike the most recent algorithm ‘hack’ its unlikely to stop working anytime soon

You see, many of us are focused about trying to figure out what people are interested in, what they’re going to watch, whats going to drive engagement & growth for us…

What people don’t realise, is there’s an easy way to cut out the guesswork

No, its not some fancy app that tells you what your competitors posted

And its not some regurgitated Chat GPT ideas either

All you have to do, is take a look at what news is trending in your industry

Then create a video giving your two cents on the topic

This works especially well if you’re an expert in something

The reason for it, is because if people already care deeply about the topic you are creating about, then right out the gate they’re going to interest in what you have to say about it, especially if you have some credibility there

For example, if you’re in the personal finance niche

Create a video about Space X going public, its already a trending topic, you can do some research on the situation and weigh in with your thoughts on the situation, it’ll probably go really well

If you’re a nutritionist or personal trainer, create a video talking about the fact that Norway took 1,000kg of their own food into America for the Football World Cup because they value nutrition that much and want healthy food that helps them perform their absolute best

If you’re an accountant, talk about a recent tax change that could be in the news, and explain whats actually happening alongside what people need to know

All of these topics are trending, and given that trust with the mainstream media is at an all time low, people turn to social media and independent experts to learn whats happening

This works even if you aren’t an expert on something, you can go down the route of reporting whats happening and providing your opinion

If you’re in the sports niche, talk about whats happening at the Football World Cup or the Tour De France

There’s enough controversy in there to fuel hundreds of viral pieces of content

Literally, take a trending topic and talk about it, either as an expert, or someone reporting/researching what happened with your opinion on top (or simply reporting with a ‘what do you think?’ at the end of it)

Its a guaranteed way to reach tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people per post, sometimes even millions if your niche is big enough

The one thing to be careful of here is to consider your goals on social media

Remember last week we talked about ‘maximising views’ being a secondary goal?

And how you should have a main goal above that, such as driving leads for your business, creating awareness for a cause, educating people or whatever else it may be

Keep that in mind when creating this

If your goal is to drive leads to your business, make sure the topics you are talking about make sense

The accountant who explains the tax changes & what people need to know, is certainly going to be generating leads for his business, because naturally people will view him/her as the expert in this field

However if they create a video about Space X’s IPO, whilst they might be knowledgeable on the situation due to their background, is probably not going to reach people who need help with their accounting, that ones probably more in the lane of the investment advisor

Alongside the topics, is just to think of the discussion you are creating

If your goal is education or growing a business, avoid content that you know is simply going to create anger & frustration, despite the fact it could well get a lot of views

Just a warning, to consider the bigger picture here, leverage these trending topics to build your audience, but don’t let the pursuit of views take you down the path of creating content about the wrong things just for the sake of attention online

Hope this helps,
Josh
