Hey team,

The one way to guarantee you feel like crap on social media is to make your focus generating as many views as possible

It'll cause you to constantly shift your content, constantly change what you’re doing, and feel like crap anytime views eventually drop off

All for a quick dopamine hit whenever things do well

You see we all want to get more views, more engagement & more growth

But it should never be your primary goal

If it is your primary goal, it’ll cause you to create content that doesn’t align with you, or your brand, or your audience, in the pursuit of more reach short term

Which can cause you to gain a completely different audience to the one you intended, which now has you stuck as a slave to the algorithms chasing that next viral hit

Its exhausting

On the other hand, if you anchor your primary goal to something a bit more tangible, and use views, or growth as a secondary goal, it becomes a lot more sustainable

For example, a business owner shouldn’t be optimising for views.

In most cases they should be looking to build trust & generate new customers, if they can find way to create sharper content that gets more views whilst still achieving this goal, thats great!

But what they shouldn’t be doing is abandoning this primary goal, to create off brand content chasing views.

Now a different example might be a creator, they don’t have a business but they want to build a reputation as being a trusted source of fitness information so that long term they can earn an income from their content

Again, if they can find a way to improve their content to both achieve this goal & increase their reach, thats a good strategy

But going all out to chase views will end up getting this creator a ton of views, but no trust, no loyal audience, and therefor barely any income later down the line from their content

If you want to get off the views treadmill, all you need is a new goal

  • Newsletter sign ups

  • Leads

  • Customers

  • Podcast downloads

  • Trust

  • Leaving an impact

And whilst some of these are hard to measure, such as trust or impact, I think its pretty clear to most people whether a piece of content builds trust or creates an impact

Then have that at the forefront of your decision making

If you have that in place, you can then start thinking about how you get more views on your content to increase the amount of newsletter sign ups, or lead, or customers you generate from your content

Hope this helps,

Josh
